The South Carolina Brewer’s Guild (SCBG) recently announced that four breweries from the state won awards at the Great American Beer Fest (GABF®), held Oct. 10-12 in Denver.
The 38th GABF, hosted by the Brewer’s Association (BA), is the country’s largest beer competition. This year, in partnership with the American Cider Association, 273 breweries and cideries earned 326* medals in 102 categories and 170 subcategories. In total, 8,836 beers were judged and 1,869 breweries and cideries competed, representing all 50 states, plus Washington, D.C. and Puerto Rico.
Representing South Carolina, Holy City Brewing (North Charleston) took home gold for their Washout Wheat (South German-Style Hefeweizen), the second time Washout has won in the competition.
“It's always nice to get a medal at GABF because it's not easy. We took a bronze for Washout in 2014, so it's been 10 years. It’s nice to be able to get another one,” Holy City Brewing’s Owner Chris Brown said.
Columbia Craft Brewing Co. (Columbia) also took home gold for their Modern Gothic (German-Style Kölsch). Hobcaw Brewing Co. (Mount Pleasant) won silver for their Mercy Cloud (American Wheat Bear), while Munkle Brewing (Charleston) won a bronze each for their Gully Washer Wit (Belgian-Style Witbier) and Munk Lager (International-Style Pilsener).
“We’re completely overjoyed that our head brewer Ram Khalsa was recognized with this incredible and well-deserved award,” said Chris Mottram, co-owner of Hobcaw. “He’s been producing top-notch beer professionally for a decade, and this medal solidifies him as one of the best brewers in the nation. Mercy Cloud was one of the first beers Ram created when he came on board as Hobcaw's head brewer about 14 months ago, and is one of our four core beers, so it's extra special to win a medal for that one."
This is Hobcaw’s first win at GABF. Columbia Craft last won in 2020 for their Carolinian (gold, Golden or Blonde Ale) and Munkle last won in 2018 for their 5 Branches Biere de Garde (gold, Belgian and French-Style Ale).
